Indian Travellers Drive Japan’s Tourism Boom with Over 120% Surge in Spending

Japan is witnessing a remarkable surge in spending by Indian tourists, showcasing the growing allure of the country’s rich cultural heritage and vibrant hospitality. According to the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) Delhi office, Indian visitors spent an impressive 19.2 billion yen (approximately ₹1,076.8 million) between April and June 2024. This marks a staggering 120.7% increase compared to 2019 and a 63.1% rise from 2023.

Indian travelers contributed 0.9% to Japan’s total foreign visitor spending during this period, with the majority of expenses going toward accommodation (44.3%), food (18.6%), and shopping (17.5%). On average, an Indian visitor spent 266,186 yen—11.3% higher than the global average and a 61.4% jump from 2019 figures.

For leisure travel, Indian tourists spent an average of 299,950 yen, 25.8% higher than the global average. A total of 71,923 Indian visitors arrived in Japan during this period, representing a 36.7% increase compared to 2019. Particularly in May, the number of Indian travelers soared by 61.7%.

JNTO Executive Director Ryo Bunno highlighted this upward trend, attributing it to India’s rising affluence and the irresistible charm of Japan’s unique traditions, culinary experiences, and scenic landscapes.

To further enhance the appeal of Japan among Indian travelers, JNTO has been actively promoting initiatives like the Japan Travel Fair in Delhi and developing custom travel packages. These efforts aim to provide tailored experiences and strengthen Japan’s position as a top destination for Indian tourists.

With such significant growth in spending and visitor numbers, it’s clear that Indian travelers are playing a key role in driving Japan’s tourism revival.
